New digital era of Cloud Applications

Microsoft boss Satya Nadella gives big thumbs up to India’s digital story, calls it ‘golden age’ of tech

Public Digital Good

Microsoft Chairman & CEO, Satya Nadella today expressed high levels of optimism on India leading what he termed the ‘public digital good’ story.  “I am hugely encouraged by what I see,” he said at the company’s Future Ready Leadership Summit in Mumbai.

The public digital good was referred in context to education, healthcare, and so on, which caters to the public, and where digitalization can play a very important role in propelling it further.

Speaking at the Microsoft Future Ready Leadership Summit in Mumbai as part of his four-day India visit, Nadella highlighted six “digital imperatives” that businesses must focus on today. Further, he underlined the role that technologies and applications built natively on cloud platforms can play for modern businesses.

In addition, Nadella highlighted that generative AI tools world AI data sets. Moreover, he expressed that ChatGPT and Dall-E, generated less than 1% of the world’s AI data sets in 2021. Besides, this can increase to 10% of all data generated by AI by 2025.

“In future, the generative models will generate most of the data. We are right now seeing the emergence of a new reasoning engine. We’ll clearly have to talk about this reasoning engine — what are its responsible uses, what displacements will it cause, and so on. But on the other side, we should also think about how it can augment us in what we are doing today since it can have a huge impact on our future,” Nadella said.

Cloud native Applications Azure

According to him, the current phase of the digital revolution globally is the golden age. “We saw it in the past with the computer revolution. Now, it is really about spreading productivity across sectors,” the India-born CEO said.

For that to take place, he explained that data infrastructure was critical. “Be it data analysis or just governance, we need to put in place one integrated data framework,” said Nadella. On the issue of the big change globally, he picked out cloud. “I saw the PC revolution. What we are seeing with the cloud is the early to intermediate phase and it will only get more interesting.”

He further expressed his mind powers by stating, the cloud brings forth strategic advantages among which are being more energy-efficient to the extent of 70-80 per cent more efficient. “You consume it only when you need it.”

Microsoft’s Azure suite of services ranks as among the top three cloud platforms in the world, alongside Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud. Addressing the audience in Mumbai, Nadella underlined that Microsoft is investing heavily to build cloud infrastructure, including a new cloud and data centre infrastructure in Hyderabad. With this, Microsoft presently has over 60 cloud regions and over 200 data centres around the world.

In the case of India, he referred to a host of clients among which were the Adani group, HDFC Bank where Microsoft has done significant cloud-related work. “There is momentum and also scope for innovation that exists,” said Nadella. At the core of this are the data centres, where he expects India to play a big role.
