Green Hydrogen to be India’s Future Fuel

Green hydrogen to be India’s future fuel, says union minister R K Singh

As per Union minister R K Singh, green hydrogen will be the future fuel of India. He further urges investors to invest in India to manufacture the clean energy source.

Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen is produced by using renewable energy to power the electrolysis of water. It is considered as a clean and sustainable energy source that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel dependence.

According to the World Economic Forum, green hydrogen could be a critical enabler of the global transition to sustainable energy and net zero emissions economies. There is unprecedented momentum around the world to fulfil hydrogen’s longstanding potential as a clean energy solution.

Some of the benefits are:

It can be used to decarbonize sectors that are hard to electrify. These sectors include, cement and iron production, long haul freight, shipping, and aviation.

Further, it can be used to produce green ammonia, the main constituent of synthetic fertilizer.

It can be used for long-duration grid energy storage and for long-duration seasonal energy storage.

However, the future fuel also faces some challenges, such as:

It is more expensive than hydrogen derived from fossil fuels without carbon capture (grey hydrogen).

Further, it requires large amounts of renewable electricity and water to produce.

It needs infrastructure and standards for transportation, distribution, and utilization.

Several governments and international organizations have adopted policies to promote the commercialization of it, and it’s production is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. For example, India has launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission to accelerate the development of technologies and applications in various sectors.

Future Fuel

R K Singh, Union minister of India, on Wednesday said that this is going to be the future fuel of India.

Further, he made remarks on powered and renewable energy source at the first International Conference on Green Hydrogen 2023.

“We will help you in developing projects. We will also help you with demand as well. Come and partner with us,” PTI quoted Singh as saying while addressing the conference attended by over 2,500 participants.

Furthermore, he addressed India as the largest trading market in the world. Moreover, he urged investors to partner for development of electrolytes, mechanism for transportation of green hydrogen, usage of it in manufacturing for green steel and cement.

He further added, “India shall emerge as a leader in green hydrogen.”

In addition, there are certain industries which have started working to establish 3.5 MT capacity. Additionally, engaging various states and persons for land acquisition.

Besides, in January 2023, the Centre approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore with an aim to make India a global hub for manufacturing it.

Moreover, the mission seeks to promote development of a production capacity of at least 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonne) per annum with an associated renewable energy capacity addition of about 125 GW in the country by 2030.
