Sri Lankan Army doctors set World record by removing World’s largest Kidney Stone
The kidney stone, removed early this month at the Colombo Army Hospital, is 13.372 cm long and weighs 801 grams, a statement by the Army said on Tuesday.
The stone removed from ex-sergeant Canistus Coonge weighed 801 grams (28.25 ounces). However, it is more than five times the weight of an average male kidney, the army said.
Coonge’s kidney stone measured 13.37 cm (5.26 inches) long, compared to an average kidney which is about 10 to 12 cm long.
Guinness World Record
A world record has been set by a group of Army doctors in Sri Lanka. The doctors surpassed the previous world record of Indian doctors in 2004 by removing the world’s largest kidney stone.
However, the stone was removed yesterday at the Colombo army hospital. Further, as notified by the doctors the stone is 13.372 cm long and weighs 801 grams.
According to the existing Guinness World Records, the erstwhile largest kidney stone in the world, around 13 cm, was found in India in 2004. While, the heaviest kidney stone, weighing 620 grams, was reported in Pakistan in 2008.
Confirming the record, the Guinness World Record said, “The largest kidney stone is 13.372 cm (5.264 in), and was removed from Canistus Coonghe (Sri Lanka) in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on June 1, 2023.” It added that the previous record of 13 cm had not been surpassed since 2004.
Surgery led by Army Doctors
Moreover, the surgery was led by consultant Urologist Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) K. Sutharshan, Head of Genito Urinary Unit at the hospital. Besides, the surgery was accompanied by Captain (Dr) W.P.S.C Pathirathna and Dr Thamasha Premathilaka.
Furthermore, Colonel (Dr) U.A.L.D Perera and Colonel (Dr) C.S Abeysinghe also contributed during the surgery as Consultant Anaesthetists, the Sri Lanka Army statement said.
This is an amazing achievement by the Sri Lankan Army doctors and a testament to their skill and expertise.
